The Gold Guide
Understanding Gold Finishes
Not all gold jewellery is created the same.
Here’s a simple guide to the differences so you can choose what feels right for you.
Gold Vermeil (what we use)
Base: Sterling silver
Gold layer: At least 2.5 microns of 10k (or higher) gold
Durability: Much thicker and more resilient than standard plating, it won't tarnish.
Value: A premium look and feel without the cost of solid gold
Gold vermeil offers a fine jewellery look and feel, without the cost of solid gold, what we call demi-fine. With mindful wear and thoughtful storage, it stays beautiful for years.
Gold-Filled
Base: Usually brass
Gold layer: 5% gold weight bonded to the base metal
Durability: Longer-lasting than gold-plated
Value: Mid-range price point
Gold-filled jewellery has a thicker layer of gold than plating, which can make it more durable. However, because the gold is bonded rather than moulded, it limits the level of fine detail, stone-setting, and delicate shaping possible in the design.
For us, that trade-off didn’t align with the level of refinement and symbolism we wanted to create.
Gold-Plated
Base: Often brass or copper
Gold layer: Very thin (typically under 0.5 microns)
Durability: Most affordable, but wears down more quickly as it is highly sensitive to water, sweat and daily friction.
Solid Gold
Base: Gold alloyed with other metals for strength
Gold layer: Solid throughout
Durability: The longest-lasting option
Care: Can be worn daily with minimal concern
Value: Highest price point and intrinsic value
